A 18 day 17 nights – Classic Birding safari- Endemics and specialties of northern & northern-east Tanzania.
Day 1-Arrival and overnight in Arusha
This day is set aside as arrival day. Depending on your flight schedule, upon your arrival at Kilimanjaro airport you find the driver with a sign reading CHARLES TOURS and your name on it. After a short introduction will take a short drive to your hotel for overnight at Ngare
Sero Mountain Lodge.
Day 2:Arusha National Park
Day 3 for overnight
Birding for the endemic such as Broadringed White-eye and the restricted range endemic Taveta weaver and near endemic Arbott’s starlings and other specialities. Dinner and overnight at Ngare sero mountain Lodge, Lark plains for the endemic Beesley’s lark and other dry county specials such as the near endemic Southern Grosbeak -Canary, Red-throated Tit and Short-toed Lark. Later, drive back to your hotel for dinner and overnight Aafter lunch drive to Babati near mbulu mountains.
Day 4: Mbulu mountains – Karatu
Early breakfast before we drive to Mbulu mountains for the endemic Mbul-ground Robin and the near endemic Mbul White-eye, later drive to Karatu village for dinner and overnight at Octagon Lodge.
Day: 5
Drive to Serengeti via Ngorongoro conservation area, birding en route. Afternoon, proceed with birding from southern Serengeti, looking for the endemic Grey-breasted Spurfowl, Rufous-tailed Weaver, the near endemic Grey-crested Helmet-shrike and Usambiro Barbet. we will also look for the highly sought out after bird – the karamoja Apalis which is endemic to East Africa. Overnight at Hippo Trails Tented Camp- Central Serengeti.
Day 6: Birding and big game in Serengeti.
Day 7: Ngorongoro highlands
We will leave the grassy plains of the mighty serengeti Np very early in the morning with packed lunches on hand making a stop at the ngorongoro highlands for the east african endemic Hunter’s Cisticola, Jackson’s Widowbird, Eastern Double-collared Sunbird and Schalow’s Turaco. Later, drive to Karatu village for dinner and overnight at Farm of dreams Lodge.
Day 8:
Drive to Tarangire Np for the endemic Ashy starling, Yellow-collared Lovebird and Emin’s Barbet, the near endemic Northern Pied-Babbler and east african endemic Hildebrandt’s starlings are fairly common here .Dinner and overnight at Tarangire Safari Lodge.
Day 9: Birding in Tarangire. Overnight at Safari Lodge
Day 10:
Birding in Tarangire before we drive back to Arusha for dinner and overnight at Tumbili Lodge.
Day 11:
Drive to south pare mountains via Nyumba ya Mungu dam for maasai arid zones specials such as Acacia Tit, Black-throated Barbets, Golden-brested and Fischers Starlings, Black-bellied and Tsavo Sunbirds, Pink-breasted Lark and Somali Bunting. We will have our picnic lunch and later drive in to our hotel in small town of Same. In the evening drive up the south Pare mountains for the endemic -South pare White-eye and the distinctive race paarensis of bar-throated apalis, East-coast Boubou and Flycatcher can also be seen up there. Hot dinner and overnight in Same town.
Day 12:
Morning birding near Mkomazi Np and transfer to Magamba forest in West Usambara mountains for birding.
Day 13:
Full day in Magamba forest-we will bird for the endemic Usambara double-collared Sunbird, Usambara Weaver, Usambara Thrush, Usambara/Montane Tiny Greenbul, Usambara Akalat and other specialities. Dinner and overnight in a lodge in magamba
Day 14:
Morning birding in Magamba and transfer to Amani nature reserve in East Usambara mountains and bird the botanical garden late in the evening -Night in Amani rest House
Day 15 &16 :Birding in Amani Nature Reserve-
We will bird for the endemic Banded Green Sunbird, Usambara Hyliota, Usambara Bluebill, Tanzanian Illadopsis, Usambara Eagle-owl and Long-billed forest-Warbler ,the near endemic Uluguru violet Backed and Amani Sunbirds. Other birds include Mombasa Woodpecker, Fischers and Lowland tiny Greenbul, Fischer’s Turaco, Plain-backed Sunbirds, Cabanis’s Bunting, Krestchmer’s Longbill and many more. Dinner and overnight at Amani rest House.
Day 17:
Birding around Amani, sampling some bushes along the way back to Arusha, dinner and overnight at greenside – Kili Golf.
Day 18:
Depending on your flight schedules, morning birding Kili Golf or go for shopping in Arusha then and later on, transfer to Arusha / Kilimanjaro for your flight to the next destination.
