Arusha is the starting point for almost every safari in northern Tanzania. It sits at the foot of Mount Meru, about an hour from Kilimanjaro International Airport, and it’s where our office is.
At the airport
Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) is small and easy. After immigration and baggage, look for your name on a sign. We meet every arriving guest, whatever time the flight lands. The drive to Arusha takes about an hour, and on a clear day Kilimanjaro is visible behind you.
Money and phones
There are ATMs at the airport and in Arusha. Cards are accepted at most lodges, but bring some US dollars in clean, recent notes. A local SIM card with data is cheap and easy to buy in town with your passport. Your guide can help.
The first night
Most guests spend the first night at a hotel or lodge in or near Arusha, ideally somewhere quiet with a garden. Many Arusha lodges have excellent garden birding, so birders often start their list before the safari even begins.
A spare day?
If you arrive a day early, a day trip to Arusha National Park is ideal, especially for birders. Or rest, walk around town, and visit the market.
Briefing
Your guide will meet you the evening before or on the morning of your safari to go through the plan, answer questions and check you have everything you need.

What if my flight is delayed?
