The best time for birding in Tanzania, month by month

The short answer: November to April. That’s when birds from Europe and Asia spend the northern winter here, and many resident birds are breeding and in their best plumage. On a two-week trip in those months, a species list of 400 or more is realistic.

That’s only part of the picture, though. Here’s how the year looks from where we sit in Arusha.

November to March: peak birding

The short rains usually fall in November and turn the country green. Palearctic migrants arrive, including wheatears, harriers, warblers and waders. Widowbirds and bishops moult into breeding colours, and the weavers get busy building nests.

January and February are often dry and bright between the two rainy seasons. They’re also calving season in the southern Serengeti, so birders and wildlife fans are both well served.

April and May: the long rains

This is the wettest time of year. Some tracks get slow, a few lodges close, and forest birding in the Usambaras is hard work. But the parks are quiet and prices drop. With a flexible guide and a sturdy vehicle, you can still have excellent days, especially close to Arusha.

June to October: the dry season

The migrants have gone, but the resident birds are all still here and much easier to see. Grass is short, trees lose their leaves, and birds gather at water. It’s also the best time for big game, so it suits mixed groups well.

So when should you come?

If birds are the main point of the trip, come between November and March. If you’re splitting your time between birds and big game, June to October works well. If you want the Usambara endemics, avoid April and May.

Whatever your dates, tell us which birds matter most to you and we’ll plan the route around them.

Your questions answered

What is the single best month for birding in Tanzania?

Many birders pick January or February: migrants are present, residents are breeding, and it’s often dry between the rains.

Is birding good in July?

Yes. Migrants are absent, but resident birds are easy to see in the dry season, and game viewing is excellent.

When should I avoid the Usambaras?

April and May, when the long rains make forest trails very difficult.
