The Big Five were originally the animals hunters considered most dangerous on foot. Today they’re a wildlife-watcher’s checklist. Here’s where we look for each in northern Tanzania.
Elephant
Easy. Tarangire has some of the largest herds in East Africa, especially from June to October. You’ll also see elephants in Manyara, the Serengeti and the Ngorongoro highlands.
Buffalo
Easy. Large herds live in the Serengeti and the crater, and old bulls graze in Arusha National Park and on the crater rim.
Lion
Very likely. The Serengeti has one of the largest lion populations in Africa, and the crater lions are used to vehicles. In Tarangire, look along the river.
Leopard
Possible, and needs luck. The Seronera River area of the central Serengeti is the best bet. Leopards rest in sausage and acacia trees along the river. Tarangire also has good sightings. Your chances go up with every extra day.
Black rhino
The hardest. The Ngorongoro Crater is the most reliable place in Tanzania, and a few live in parts of the Serengeti. Bring binoculars, because sightings are often at a distance.
How many days?
With the crater and at least two Serengeti days, most guests see four of the five, and many see all five. Our 5-day lodge safari and 6-day safari are designed with this in mind.
Your questions answered
Is the Big Five guaranteed?
No. These are wild animals. Good guides and more days improve your chances a lot.
Which is the rarest?
Black rhino, followed by leopard.
Can I see the Big Five in one day?
It’s possible in the Ngorongoro Crater, although leopard is rarely seen there.
