How much does a Tanzania safari cost? What you’re actually paying for

Two quotes for the same number of days can differ by thousands of dollars, and it isn’t always obvious why. Here’s what goes into the price of a private Tanzania safari, so you can compare quotes properly.

1. Park and conservation fees

This is the biggest fixed cost. Tanzania National Parks charge a daily conservation fee per person for each park, and the Ngorongoro Conservation Area adds a separate vehicle fee for the crater. The Serengeti and Ngorongoro are the most expensive. Fees are set by the government and change from time to time, so any honest quote should list them, or at least include them clearly.

2. Accommodation

This is where prices vary most. The same route can be done with comfortable mid-range lodges or luxury tented camps. Staying inside the Serengeti also means paying a daily concession fee on top of the room rate, which is one reason lodges inside the park cost more than those just outside.

3. The vehicle and guide

A private 4×4 with a pop-up roof, fuel and a professional guide is charged per day, whether one person or six are in the car. That’s why a safari for two costs more per person than a safari for four.

4. Season

Lodge prices are highest from June to October and over Christmas, and lowest in April and May, when the long rains fall. The wildlife is still there in the green season. There are just fewer vehicles and lower prices.

What to watch for in a quote

Check that park fees, crater fees, drinking water and airport transfers are included. A quote that looks very cheap sometimes leaves out park fees, or crams too many parks into too few days.

Your questions answered

Why do private safaris cost more than group tours?

You pay for the whole vehicle and guide rather than a seat. In return, you control the pace, the stops and the route.

Are tips included?

No. Tips are extra and always up to you. We’ll give you current guidelines when you book.

Do you charge extra for single travellers?

The vehicle and guide cost the same for one person as for two, so the per-person price is higher. Some lodges also add a single supplement.
