Safari etiquette: tipping, photos and good manners in the bush

None of this is complicated. It just helps to know before you arrive.

Tipping

Tipping is customary in the Tanzanian safari industry and always appreciated, though never compulsory. Many travellers set aside a daily amount for their guide and cook, plus a contribution to the general staff box at each lodge. Tip at the end of the trip, in US dollars or Tanzanian shillings, in an envelope. We’ll send current guidelines with your booking so you don’t have to guess.

Photographing people

Always ask before you photograph someone, and accept a no. In Maasai areas, some people may ask for a small payment. Your guide can help you ask politely in Kiswahili or Maa.

At a sighting

  • Keep your voice low and stay inside the vehicle unless your guide says otherwise.
  • Don’t ask your guide to drive off-road or closer than is allowed. The fines are real, and so is the stress to the animals.
  • Share the space. If other vehicles are waiting, we give them a turn.

In villages and towns

Dress modestly off safari, particularly in towns and villages, and greet people. A simple “jambo” or “habari” goes a long way. Ask before entering homes or bomas.

Plastic

Tanzania has banned single-use plastic bags, including in luggage. Pack with fabric or reusable bags. We provide drinking water in large refillable containers in the vehicle.

Your questions answered

Should I tip in dollars or shillings?

Either is fine. Clean, recent US dollar notes are widely accepted.

Are plastic bags really banned?

Yes, carrier bags are banned, and bags may be removed from luggage at the airport.

What does ‘jambo’ mean?

It’s an informal ‘hello’. ‘Habari’ (‘how are you?’) is also common.
