Bird photography on safari: practical tips from the vehicle

A safari vehicle is actually a good photography hide. Birds and animals are used to vehicles and often let you get much closer than you could on foot. A few simple habits make a big difference.

Lenses

For birds, a 100–400mm or 150–600mm zoom covers most situations. A second body with a shorter lens is useful for landscapes and larger animals. Teleconverters help, but they cost you light in the early morning.

Support

A beanbag resting on the window frame or roof hatch is steadier and faster than a tripod. Bring it empty and fill it with rice or beans in Arusha. When you’re shooting, ask the driver to switch off the engine to cut the vibration.

Light

The first two hours after sunrise and the last two before sunset give warm, low light and active birds. Midday light is harsh, which makes it a good time for a rest.

Positioning

Tell your guide you’re photographing, and they’ll position the vehicle with the sun behind you and the background clear. A few metres of repositioning can turn a snapshot into a portrait. Private trips make this easy, because there’s no one else in the vehicle to wait for.

Ethics

We don’t use playback to lure birds for photographs, and we keep our distance from nests. The best photos come from patience, not pressure.

Photographers often choose our 4-day Arusha birding tour for its short drives and time to wait.

Your questions answered

Is there charging in the vehicle?

Yes, our vehicles have charging points, but bring spare batteries.

Can I get out of the vehicle to photograph?

Only in designated areas and on guided walks. In most parks you must stay in the vehicle.

Do you allow drones?

Drones are not permitted in Tanzanian national parks without special permission.
