Mammal Diceros bicornis

Black rhino

Critically endangered and closely guarded. The Ngorongoro Crater is the most reliable place in Tanzania to see one.

Fewer than thirty black rhinos live on the floor of the Ngorongoro Crater, watched around the clock by rangers. Seeing one is never guaranteed, but the crater gives you the best chance in Tanzania, usually as a distant shape in the morning before the animals move into cover.

The Serengeti has a small, growing population around the Moru Kopjes. We never approach rhinos closely; a good sighting is one where the animal does not know we are there.

Guide’s tip

Look for a dark, hunched shape on the open crater floor and let your guide confirm it with binoculars before you drive closer.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
