Mammal Panthera pardus

Leopard

Secretive and beautiful. The Seronera valley’s sausage trees are the best place in Africa to find one by day.

The leopard is the most elusive of the big cats, which is exactly why guests remember finding one. In the central Serengeti they rest by day in the sausage trees and acacias along the Seronera River, and our guides know which trees they favour.

Tarangire and Ruaha are also excellent, with leopards using the big riverside trees. A sighting usually starts with a shape that is slightly wrong for a branch, so we drive slowly and look up.

Guide’s tip

Scan horizontal branches, not the ground. A dangling tail is often the first thing you see.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
