Resident Apaloderma vittatum

Bar-tailed Trogon

A jewel of the montane forest that sits motionless for minutes, then is simply gone.

The Bar-tailed Trogon is one of the most sought-after forest birds in East Africa. Green above, red below, with a finely barred tail, it perches quietly in the shade and is far easier to hear than to see.

Arusha National Park and the forests of the Usambaras are our best sites, and the Udzungwa trails produce it too. Patience and a guide who knows the call make all the difference.

Guide’s tip

Trogons turn their green backs to you and freeze. Scan the mid-storey for a vertical shape with a barred tail.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
