Lark Plains

The short-grass plains north of Arusha are the only place on earth to see Beesley’s Lark. How to visit, and what else you’ll find there.

The Lark Plains near Engikaret don’t look like much: flat, short grass, a few Maasai bomas and a lot of sky. But they’re the only place in the world where you can see Beesley’s Lark, one of Africa’s most threatened birds.

We go early, before the heat haze, and always with a local Maasai site guide who knows where the birds are holding territory. Please don’t visit without one. The birds are few, and repeated disturbance does them real harm.

The same plains are good for other larks, coursers, sandgrouse and raptors, so even a short visit adds plenty to your list.

Getting there

The plains near Engikaret are about an hour north of Arusha, off the road towards Longido. There are no facilities, so we bring everything with us.

Where to stay

Visitors usually stay in Arusha or at a lodge near Arusha National Park and visit the plains at dawn.

Our guides’ tips

  • Go at first light. By late morning the heat haze makes lark-watching very hard.
  • Always go with a local site guide, to protect the birds and support the community.
  • Wear neutral colours and walk slowly. The birds are well camouflaged.
  • Bring a hat and water. There’s no shade at all.

Is it worth visiting if I’m not a lark enthusiast?
