Resident Telophorus cruentus

Rosy-patched Bushshrike

A duet from the top of a thorn bush, with a rose-pink patch down the breast. A dry-country gem.

The Rosy-patched Bushshrike is a bird of the dry acacia country and one of the highlights of a morning on the Lark Plains. The male sings from the top of a bush and the female answers, a rolling duet that carries a long way.

The thorn scrub between Arusha and Tarangire is full of them in the early morning, and the eastern Serengeti plains hold them too.

Guide’s tip

Pairs duet from exposed perches in the first hour of light. After that they drop into cover.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
