Near-endemic Tauraco fischeri

Fischer’s Turaco

The coastal and Usambara forests’ turaco, with a red crest tipped white. A target bird for every East Usambara trip.

Fischer’s Turaco replaces Hartlaub’s in the lower, warmer forests of the East Usambaras and the coast. It is a near-endemic of East Africa and one of the most colourful birds in the Amani forest.

We usually find it from the forest roads around Amani early in the morning, calling from the canopy. It is often in the same trees as Silvery-cheeked Hornbills and Green Barbets.

Where to look

Guide’s tip

Fruiting fig trees are the place to wait. Turacos, hornbills and barbets all arrive together.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
