Resident Balearica regulorum

Grey Crowned Crane

The golden crown, the dance and the bugling call. Endangered, but still a daily sight on the crater floor.

Grey Crowned Cranes are large, elegant and in trouble; their numbers have fallen sharply across Africa as wetlands are drained. Tanzania’s protected marshes still hold good numbers, and the Ngorongoro Crater is one of the best places anywhere to watch them.

The dance, with wings spread and heads bobbing, is one of the great sights of African birding. Listen too for the honking call, which carries across the crater floor in the early morning.

Where to look

Wet grassland on the Ngorongoro Crater floor, the Momella Lakes and the Serengeti marshes.

Guide’s tip

Cranes dance to strengthen pair bonds, not just to court. Watch any pair for ten minutes and you will usually see it.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
