Endemic Agapornis personatus

Yellow-collared Lovebird

Green, yellow and masked in black, chattering in flocks around the baobabs. A Tanzanian endemic you will hear before you see.

The Yellow-collared Lovebird is one of the birds our guests most want to see, and one of the easiest endemics to find. Flocks screech through the baobabs of Tarangire and gather to drink at waterholes in the late afternoon.

Our guides know which acacias the lovebirds come to at four in the afternoon, and that is not a figure of speech. Fischer’s Lovebird replaces it further north in the Serengeti.

Where to look

Tarangire’s baobabs, Lake Manyara and the acacia woodland of the Serengeti and Ruaha.

Guide’s tip

Lovebirds nest in old woodpecker and barbet holes in baobabs. Watch the trunks at dusk.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
