Lake Victoria is the largest lake in Africa, and its southern shore lies in Tanzania around Mwanza, Musoma and the Speke Gulf. For birders it brings in species that are hard or impossible to find in the northern parks.
Papyrus swamps along the shore hold specialists that live almost nowhere else, while rocky islands and fishing villages attract gulls, cormorants, herons and plenty of African Fish Eagles.
The Speke Gulf sits right next to the western corridor of the Serengeti, so the lake is easy to add to a northern birding tour. It is also the gateway to Rubondo Island National Park.
