Resident Trachyphonus erythrocephalus

Red-and-yellow Barbet

Spotted like a leopard and loud as a duet. Pairs sing together from termite mounds in the dry bush.

Few birds are as striking as a Red-and-yellow Barbet in the morning sun. Pairs and family groups nest in termite mounds and sing a rolling duet that carries across the bush.

They are common in the drier parts of northern Tanzania, and our drive from Arusha to Tarangire usually produces the first one before we reach the park gate.

Where to look

Termite mounds and thorn scrub in Tarangire, the Lark Plains and Ruaha.

Guide’s tip

The duet goes “red-n-yellow, red-n-yellow”. Follow the sound to the top of a termite mound.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
