Resident Himantopus himantopus

Black-winged Stilt

Pink legs longer than seems sensible, wading the soda lakes among the flamingos.

The Black-winged Stilt is an elegant wader found on shallow alkaline lakes across Tanzania. Its legs are proportionally the longest of any bird, and it uses them to wade where other shorebirds cannot.

The soda lakes of the Rift Valley are full of them, often in the same bays as flamingos and avocets. They are a good introduction to the waders for anyone new to birding.

Where to look

Lake Manyara, the Momella Lakes and Lake Magadi on the crater floor.

Guide’s tip

Stilts nest on open mud and defend their chicks loudly. If one is calling at you, back off and look for the young.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
