Resident Lophoceros alboterminatus

Crowned Hornbill

A neat, dark hornbill with a red bill and a white belly, usually in pairs along the forest edge.

The Crowned Hornbill is the forest-edge hornbill of eastern and western Tanzania. The orange-red bill with a small casque and the white-tipped tail separate it from the bigger Silvery-cheeked Hornbill, which lives deeper in the forest.

Pairs are loyal and noisy, calling with a thin, piping whistle. In the Eastern Arc mountains they come down to the tea gardens and village edges, so they are often the first hornbill of the trip.

Where to look

Forest edge and riverside trees in Arusha National Park, the Usambara and Udzungwa mountains and Gombe.

Guide’s tip

Hornbills fly with a few flaps and a long glide. If you see that pattern crossing a valley, follow it to the tree where the bird lands.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
