Resident Phoenicopterus roseus

Greater Flamingo

The tallest flamingo, pale pink with a pink, black-tipped bill. It sifts small invertebrates from the mud rather than algae.

Greater Flamingos are the largest of the world’s flamingos. They share Tanzania’s soda lakes with the smaller Lesser Flamingo, but feed differently, stirring up the mud with their feet and filtering out shrimps, insect larvae and other small animals.

At Lake Natron they breed on the mudflats alongside Lesser Flamingos, and smaller groups turn up at Lake Eyasi, Lake Manyara and the Momella Lakes when water levels suit them.

Guide’s tip

Look for the taller, paler birds standing apart from the Lesser Flamingo flocks. The bill colour settles it.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
