Endemic Pternistis rufopictus

Grey-breasted Spurfowl

A Serengeti endemic, and an easy one: pairs feed beside the road near Seronera every morning.

The Grey-breasted Spurfowl is found only in the Serengeti ecosystem, which makes it one of the easiest Tanzanian endemics to add to your list. It feeds on open ground near cover and is common around the Seronera lodges.

Most wildlife travellers drive past without noticing. Birders stop, and the guide who finds it for you will be as pleased as you are.

Where to look

Central and western Serengeti, especially around Seronera and the Grumeti.

Guide’s tip

Check every spurfowl on the Serengeti roads. The orange-red face and grey breast separate it from the common Yellow-necked and Red-necked birds.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
