Resident Coracias caudatus

Lilac-breasted Roller

The most photographed bird in Africa, with eight colours and a rolling display flight to match.

The Lilac-breasted Roller is the bird that turns wildlife travellers into birders. It perches in full view, shows off a lilac breast and turquoise wings, and tumbles through the air in display in a way that explains the name.

You will see dozens in the Serengeti and Tarangire. They are one of the first birds we point out on any safari, and one guests keep photographing until the last day.

Where to look

Perched on roadside bushes and dead trees in every savanna park.

Guide’s tip

Rollers sit on exposed perches and return to them. Park, wait, and it will come back with a grasshopper.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
