Endemic Artisornis moreaui

Long-billed Tailorbird

Critically endangered and almost impossible to see anywhere but the East Usambaras. A bird for serious listers.

The Long-billed Tailorbird is one of the rarest birds in Africa, known only from the East Usambara Mountains and one site in Mozambique. Amani Nature Reserve is its stronghold, and even there it takes time and a good local guide.

Finding one is a highlight of our 27-day birding expedition and of any dedicated Usambara trip. We work with forest guides who know the territories and never use prolonged playback.

Guide’s tip

It skulks in creepers at eye level. Learn the thin, high call before you go; you will not find it by sight alone.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
