Near-endemic Artisornis metopias

Red-capped Forest Warbler

Also called the African Tailorbird. A tiny, restless bird of the montane undergrowth with a rusty cap.

The Red-capped Forest Warbler is an Eastern Arc speciality that also reaches the Ngorongoro highlands. It is small and quick, with a rufous cap and a long, cocked tail, and it never seems to stop moving.

The Magamba forest in the West Usambaras is our most reliable site, and we often find it in the same mixed flocks as apalises and White-starred Robins.

Where to look

Montane forest undergrowth in the Usambaras, Udzungwa and the Ngorongoro highlands.

Guide’s tip

It moves constantly through low vegetation. Stand still at a forest edge and let it come to you.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
