Endemic Cinnyris rufipennis

Rufous-winged Sunbird

Discovered in 1981 and found only in the Udzungwa Mountains. One of the most restricted birds in Africa.

The Rufous-winged Sunbird was unknown to science until 1981, which says everything about how little explored the Udzungwa forests were. It lives only in these mountains and nowhere else on earth.

Our 13-day Udzungwa and Rubeho birding adventure is built around birds like this. Finding it usually means an early walk on the forest trails with a local guide who knows the flowering trees.

Where to look

Montane forest in the Udzungwa Mountains, above about 600 metres.

Guide’s tip

Look for a small sunbird with rufous wing panels feeding on flowers in the forest canopy, often in mixed flocks.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
