Near-endemic Batis mixta

Short-tailed Batis

A tiny black-and-white flycatcher of the Eastern Arc forests, hunting insects in the mid-storey.

The Short-tailed Batis replaces the common Chinspot Batis in the Eastern Arc forests. It is small, active and often in the same mixed flocks as sunbirds and apalises.

Amani and the Udzungwa trails both produce it. It is one of a group of Eastern Arc batises that taxonomists are still sorting out, so a good photograph is worth taking.

Where to look

Forest in the East Usambaras and the Udzungwa foothills.

Guide’s tip

Batises snap their wings in flight, a sharp click you can hear from the trail. Look up when you hear it.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
