Resident Cichladusa guttata

Spotted Morning-Thrush

The first song of the day at most lodges, rich and varied, from a spotted bird that keeps to the shadows.

Guests often ask what the beautiful song outside their tent was. In Tarangire and the Serengeti it is usually this bird, a shy thrush-like robin with a spotted breast and a rich, rolling song.

It feeds on the ground in thick cover and is easiest to see around lodges, where it has learned that people are harmless.

Where to look

Thickets and lodge gardens in Tarangire, the Serengeti and Lake Manyara.

Guide’s tip

Sit on your veranda with coffee at first light. The thrush will usually come to you.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
