Painted wolf, painted dog, wild dog: whichever name you use, this is one of the rarest sightings in Tanzania. Packs range over huge areas, hunt at dawn and dusk, and share every kill with the pups and the old.
Ruaha holds one of the most important populations in East Africa, and the denning months are the best chance to see them. In the north, packs occasionally appear in Tarangire and the Serengeti, but never predictably.
