Tree Adansonia digitata

Baobab tree

The upside-down tree, some over a thousand years old. Tarangire and Ruaha are the great baobab landscapes of Tanzania.

No tree says Tanzania like the baobab. It stores water in its swollen trunk, which is why elephants gouge the bark in the dry season, and why some trunks are hollow enough to shelter a small herd.

Tarangire is the baobab park of the north, with ancient trees standing above the river. Ruaha has even more, scattered across the hills, and hornbills, rollers and owls all nest in them.

Where to look

Throughout Tarangire and Ruaha; look for elephant damage on the trunks.

Guide’s tip

Baobabs flower at night and are pollinated by bats. Look for the big white flowers on the ground in the morning.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
