Primate Colobus guereza

Black-and-white colobus

Long white capes and a leap that seems to hang in the air. Arusha National Park’s forest is full of them.

Few animals are as elegant as a colobus monkey jumping between trees, white mantle streaming behind it. They eat only leaves, so they stay high in the canopy and rarely come down.

Arusha National Park is the easiest place in Tanzania to see them, often from the road through the forest on the way to the Ngurdoto Crater. The forests of the Usambara Mountains hold them too, alongside blue monkeys.

Guide’s tip

Listen for a deep, rolling roar at dawn. That is the males announcing their territory from the treetops.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
