Mammal Oryx beisa callotis

Fringe-eared oryx

A desert-adapted antelope with long, straight horns and tufted ears, able to go for long periods without drinking.

The fringe-eared oryx is built for dry country. It gets much of its water from the plants it eats and can tolerate high body temperatures in the heat of the day.

The hot, dry plains around Lake Natron are one of the places in northern Tanzania where you have a good chance of seeing it.

Guide’s tip

Look out on the open plains on the drive in. They are wary and often keep their distance.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
