Mammal Litocranius walleri

Gerenuk

A long-necked antelope that stands on its hind legs to browse on leaves other antelope cannot reach.

Gerenuk are browsers of dry thornbush. Their long neck and the habit of rising onto their hind legs let them feed high in the bushes, and they rarely need to drink.

They are scarce in northern Tanzania, and the scrub around Lake Natron is one of the better places to find them.

Guide’s tip

Check acacia and thornbush carefully. A gerenuk standing upright to feed is unmistakable.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
