Mammal Aepyceros melampus

Impala

The graceful antelope you will see most often, and the leopard’s favourite meal.

Impala are so common that guests stop photographing them after the first day, which is a pity. They are beautifully built, can leap three metres high, and the males’ roaring in the rutting season sounds nothing like an antelope.

They also tell you where the predators are. Impala snort and freeze when they see a leopard or wild dog, so when a herd goes still, we do too.

Where to look

Woodland edges in Tarangire, Lake Manyara, the Serengeti and Ruaha.

Guide’s tip

Count the males. A herd of females with one adult male means a breeding herd; a group of males is the bachelors waiting their turn.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
