Mammal Tragelaphus imberbis

Lesser kudu

A shy, striped antelope of dense dry bush. Males carry long spiral horns.

Lesser kudu are smaller and much shyer than their greater cousins. They rely on dense bush for cover and freeze rather than run when disturbed.

They are found in dry country such as the Natron area, Tarangire and Ruaha, but seeing one well always feels like a reward.

Where to look

Thick bush around Lake Natron, and in Tarangire and Ruaha National Parks.

Guide’s tip

Look into thickets in the early morning and late afternoon, when they move between cover and feeding areas.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
