Primate Papio anubis

Olive baboon

Lake Manyara’s troops are some of the biggest in Africa, and the most entertaining hour of any game drive.

Olive baboons live in troops of a hundred or more, with a strict hierarchy that is fascinating to watch. Lake Manyara’s forest supports some of the largest troops anywhere, and they often sit on the road, grooming and squabbling, while you wait.

They are also good lookouts. When a troop barks in alarm, there is often a leopard nearby, so our guides always stop to listen.

Where to look

Lake Manyara’s groundwater forest, Arusha National Park and along the Serengeti rivers.

Guide’s tip

Watch the babies. Olive baboon infants are black, and the whole troop takes turns carrying them.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
