Primate Cercocebus sanjei

Sanje mangabey

Discovered by science only in 1979 and found nowhere outside the Udzungwa Mountains. A habituated group can be tracked near Sanje.

The Sanje mangabey is one of Africa’s rarest monkeys, with only a few thousand left in two forest blocks of the Udzungwa Mountains. It is grey with a pale belly and a long tail, and travels in noisy groups that call to each other with a loud whoop-gobble.

A group near the Sanje waterfall trail has been habituated for research, and with a park guide you can often spend an hour with them. Finding the mangabey, the Udzungwa red colobus and the Udzungwa forest partridge on the same trip is a real achievement.

Guide’s tip

Mangabeys forage on the ground as well as in the trees, so stop and listen for rustling leaf litter before you look up.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
