Primate Piliocolobus gordonorum

Udzungwa red colobus

Found nowhere else on earth. One of two endemic monkeys that make the Udzungwa Mountains famous.

The Udzungwa Mountains are called the Galápagos of Africa for good reason. This red colobus lives only here, in the same forests as the Sanje mangabey, a monkey that science only described in 1979.

Walks on the Sanje Falls trail usually find troops feeding in the lower forest, with the roar of the waterfall below. It is one of the great primate encounters in Tanzania and almost nobody knows about it.

Where to look

Udzungwa Mountains National Park, especially on the Sanje Falls and Prince Bernhard trails.

Guide’s tip

Red colobus often feed with Sanje mangabeys. Find one species and you may get both.

Sightings are never guaranteed: these are wild animals in wild places. What we can promise is a guide who knows where to look.
