Chimpanzee trekking at Gombe and Mahale starts early. Trackers go ahead to find the community, then your guide leads you up through the forest to join them. The walk can be short or long, steep and humid, and the reward is an hour watching chimpanzees go about their lives a few metres away.
Group sizes are small and viewing time is limited by park rules to protect the chimps. Face masks are worn near them. Afterwards the lake is right there for a swim.
We combine trekking with boat trips and lakeshore birding, and recommend at least two days to allow for a second trek.
