The Eastern Arc mountains are some of the oldest forests in Africa, and the only way to explore them is on foot. In Udzungwa the Sanje Falls trail climbs through rainforest to a 170-metre waterfall with a plunge pool you can swim in.
In the Usambaras the trails run through the Magamba and Amani forests, with viewpoints over the plains and villages along the way. Both are superb for endemic birds and primates, and local guides lead every walk.
